What are Sensex and Nifty?

What are Sensex and Nifty?
Sensex and Nifty are both indices reflecting the movement of the their respective bourses-Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National stock Exchange (NSE). The sensex, the sensitive index of BSE, also called the BSE 30, is an index of 30 well established and financially sound companies listed on BSE.

Similarly, Nifty is an indicator of the 50 top companies on NSE. The SENSEX derived SENSitve index-and it was introduced by the Bombay stock Exchange on January 1, 1986. It is designed to reflect the overall market sentiments. It comprises of 30 stocks.

In the same way, NIFTY was coined from two words 'National' and 'FIFTY'. As it was constituted using 50 actively traded stocks from multiple sectors, it is considered as broader than sensex.

The base value of sensex was taken as 100, while Nifty base value was set at 1,000. When the index ascending order then the market is moving upward and if it is descending it is said that the market is falling.
